There
is an envelope in the chalet with an extensive variety of brochures from
local attractions. Below is a small sample:
Grandfather Mountain: Famous
for its skyline profile of a grandfather-like figure, it is visible from
SR 105. The park includes challenging hiking trails, a museum, a zoo of
indigenous mountain animals, a gift shop and the famous mile-high hanging
bridge, offering a breathtaking view.
Golfing:
There are many golf courses nearby so don't forget your clubs!
Hawksnest Ski Resort:
Open to the public and a short walk away from the chalet. Please visit
their web site to explore their most up-to-date seasonal amenities.
Linville Caverns: Interesting
and beautiful, these underground caverns offer an educational and enjoyable
visit.
Linville Falls:
A nice little hike is rewarded by a beautiful view of a picturesque waterfall.
The Mast General Store:
On the National Registry of Historic Sites, the Mast General Store, on
the Valle Crucis Road, is a wonderful working old general store, 1920's
vintage. It is a slice of the past and is fun for everyone.
Tweetsie Railroad:
A theme park with a full day's worth of amusement. The wonderful miniature
Tweetsie Railroad circles the park and offers transportation to visitors.
Blue Ridge Parkway:
A drive with the most extraordinary views of the Smokies and the Blue
Ridge Mountains.
Mining and Fishing: At the foot of Seven Devils is Grandfather's Mining
and Fishing, offering a stocked pond and gem mining. Tons of fun for children
and the young at heart.
Shopping: Banner Elk: is a
very quaint little village with wonderful antique and specialty shops.
On 105, just before the turn off to Banner Elk, you will find the very
nice Shoppes of Tyncastle. Boone is also very charming and offers similar
shopping options. Blowing Rock has shopping on an up-scale level, very
artsy and lovely. Shoppes on the Parkway is an outlet mall, on SR 321
between Boone and Blowing rock.
Snow Skiing: Ski Beech and Sugar
Mountain provide great adventures in skiing. If you want a change
of scenery from Hawksnest, it's but a short drive (20 minutes or so) to
these two resorts that offer many runs for the novice and expert alike.
Their sites give the latest skiing conditions.
Walking and Hiking: Most of the meandering, winding roads are paved
in this beautiful area, making for excellent walking conditions. The National
Park Service maintains several hiking trails up Grandfather
Mountain, accessible from 105 between the foot of Seven Devils and
Linville. Many more are situated along the Blue
Ridge Parkway.
Autumn Leaves: In early to mid-October at higher elevations and through
October at lower elevations, the leaves begin to change their colors.
The resulting views are truly sensational and will inspire your artistic
side or at least evoke a deep appreciation of their beauty. Truly romantic
and wonderful to behold.
